Tomorrow - Friday 14th Iyar - is Pessach Sheni - the 2nd Pessach.
In the time of the Bet Hamikdash, if a person couldn't bring the Korban Pessach on Erev Pessach, he has a 2nd chance a month later.
In the afternoon of 14th Iyar he would bring the Korban Pessach and roast it. After nightfall he would eat it with Matza and Marror. The leftovers were burnt the next morning.
Unfortunately this year we again missed both chances to bring the Korban Pessach.

You wrote that we missed both chances again this year - which seems to imply that it is too late to bring the Korban of Pesach Sheni this year; but if Moshiach were to come today, and the Beis HaMikdash were to immediately be set up all ready to bring Korbonos, wouldn't we bring the Korban of Pesach Sheni tomorrow?

ReplyDeleteWhy? because we are all Tamei Meth, and it takes 7 days to become Tahor.
Pesach Sheni is not brought unless you are Tahor. See Rambam Hilchot Korban Pessach 10:14
יד אֲבָל פֶּסַח שֵׁנִי--חָמֵץ וּמַצָּה עִמּוֹ בַּבַּיִת, וְאֵינוּ טָעוּן הַלֵּל בַּאֲכִילָתוֹ, וּמוֹצִיאִין אוֹתוֹ חוּץ לְבֵית אֲכִילָתוֹ, וְאֵין מְבִיאִין עִמּוֹ חֲגִיגָה, וְאֵינוּ בָּא בְּטֻמְאָה.

If it's a minority of Jews - less than 50% - who are Tamei - then they can't bring the Korban Pesach, but if the majority - more than 50% - is Tamei, then the Korban Pesach is brought by everyone.
ReplyDeleteActually, it seems that at least according to the Rambam, it's only the Korban Pesach on Erev Pesach that this Inyan of a majority being Tamei applies, but not necessarily for Pesach Sheni. However, it may be possible that if we were set up to bring the Korbonos again between the two periods, then for that Pesach Sheni alone, it may be possible that it may be treated the halachic status of the Korban Pesach in Nissan.
