Halocho #59 - May one ride a mule?

The Torah forbids mating animals and birds of different species - this is part of Kil'ay Beheimo. However there is no obligation to prevent them from mating naturally. A mule is the hybrid offspring of a male donkey and a female horse. A hinny is the hybrid offspring of a male horse and a female donkey. The way to tell them apart is by their ears, tails and bray. (Yes. All this is from the Kitzur.) One may not use a mule and a hinny together as they are considered as 2 distinct species. If their ears, tails and bray are similar then one can assume they are both the same animal. There is an opinion that one may not a mule at all - not even for riding on - as one would be using 2 species simultaneously. Source: KSA 175:1, 6

סימן קעה – הלכות כלאי בהמה

סעיף א - אסור להרכיב זכר על נקבה משני מינים, בין בבהמות בין בחיות בין בעופות ואפילו לגרום שירכיבו אסור. סעיף ו - פרד הוא הבא מן הסוס והחמור, ויש בו שני מינים, יש שאביו סוס ואמו חמורה, יש שאמו סוסיה ואביו חמור, והם כלאים זה בזה, ולכן הבא לקשור שתי פרדות, בודק בסימני אזנים וזנב וקול, אם דומין זה לזה בידוע שאמן ממין אחד ומותרים, ויש אומרים דאפילו פרד אחד הוי כלאים משום דבא משני מינים, ואסור לעשות בו מלאכה או לרכוב עליו.

Halocho #47 - Shaving

The Torah prohibits men from removing their Peiyot. The Peiyot-area is the hair in the triangular area from the top of the ear to the forehead to the bottom of the ear. According to some opinions even cutting the Peiyot very close to the skin with scissors is forbidden. The beard-area begins at the bottom of the ear where the Peiyot-area ends and includes the entire face. Men may not shave their beard with a razor. Even when using hair-removal cream on the beard-area men cannot use a blade or a knife; they should use a rounded spatula or other instrument that cannot cut. Women may not shave a man's beard or peiyot for him either. Source: KSA 170:1-2

סימן קע – איסור גילוח פאות הראש והזקן

סעיף א - פיאות הראש הם שתים בסוף הראש, והוא מקום חיבורו ללחי מימין ומשמאל אצל האוזן, ואפילו לגלחם במספרים כעין תער, דהיינו סמוך לבשר ולא משייר כלום מן השערות סמוך לבשר יש אוסרין, ולכן אם צריך לגלחם לרפואה, יזהר שלא לגלחם סמוך לבשר ממש, ושיעור הפיאה מכנגד שער שעל פדחתו ועד למטה מן האוזן, מקום שהלחי התחתון יוצא ומתפרד שם. סעיף ב - פיאות הזקן לא אסרה תורה להשחית אלא בתער, והפאות הן חמש ורבו בהן הדעות, לפיכך ירא שמים לא יעביר תער על כל זקנו כלל, ואפילו על השפה העליונה או תחת הגרון, ואין חילוק בין תער לאבן חד שחותך את השערות, כגון "פיגמאנט" או "פימסענשטיין" שאסור גם כן. ואותן שמסירין שער הזקן על ידי משיחה מסיד עם "אוירעם", יש להם ליזהר שלא לגרור את המשיחה בסכין, שמא יחתוך שער רק יגררו בקיסם וכדומה.
