Halocho #1047 - If you forget to say עַל הַנִּסִּים on Purim
On Purim one adds עַל הַנִּסִּים to the Birkat Hamazon during the 2nd Bracha.
If you forgot to add עַל הַנִּסִּים and you've already said 'ברוך אתה ה then you don't have to make amends.
However, if possible you should say the following during the HaRachaman's after the 4th Bracha:
During every Amida of Purim one adds עַל הַנִּסִּים during Modim.
If you forgot to add עַל הַנִּסִּים and you've already said 'ברוך אתה ה then you don't have to make amends.

Halocho #1003 - When do we light the Menora on Erev Shabbat?
On Friday afternoon one lights the Chanuka Menora before lighting Shabbat candles. One can light as early as 75 Halachic minutes before sunset. (15:34 in Jerusalem, this year.)
If possible, one should daven an early Mincha so as to light the Menora after Mincha.
One must start lighting the Menora early enough to be able to light Shabbat candles at the regular time.
On Friday one needs longer candles or more oil to ensure the Menora will be lit until 30 minutes after dark.
If lighting near a doorway, one needs to ensure that opening the door will not extinguish the Menora. If needed one should put a non-flammable partition between the Menora and the door.
Source: Kitzur Shulchan Aruch 139:17
Reminder: Thursday night and Friday is Rosh Chodesh; don't forget to add both יַעֲלֶה וְיָבֹא and עַל הַנִּסִּים to the Birkat HaMazon and the Amida.
On Shabbat we will take out 2 Sifrei Torah:
- In the first Sefer Torah we call up [at least] 7 people for the weekly portion - מִקֵּץ .
- Maftir is read from the 2nd Sefer Torah and is for Chanuka - בַּיּוֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִי from Parshat נָשֹׂא .
The Haftara this week is the Chanuka one (רָנִּי וְשִׂמְחִי בַּת צִיּוֹן from Zecharia 2:14).
Review: On Motzai Shabbat - the last night of Chanuka this year - one first makes Havdalah and then lights the Chanuka Menora.
In Shul - on Motzai Shabbat - the Menora is lit after the full-Kaddish - before וְיִתֶּן לְךָ (after ensuring that it's already Motzai Shabbat if one started prayers early).

During all 8 days (and nights) of Chanuka one adds עַל הַנִּסִּים to the Birkat Hamazon during the 2nd Bracha - נוֹדֶה לְךָ. If you forgot to add עַל הַנִּסִּים and you've already said 'בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה ה then you don't have to make amends.
However, if possible you should say the following during the HaRachaman's after the 4th Bracha:
...and then continue with the rest of the עַל הַנִּסִּים.
During every Amida of Chanuka (including Mussaf) one adds עַל הַנִּסִּים during מוֹדִים .

This week, Shabbat is also Erev Chanuka. Suggestion: Prepare your Menora before Shabbat!
Shabbat morning:
This Shabbat we read the regular Parsha - וַיֵּשֶׁב - and its regular Haftara (כֹּה אָמַר from Amos Ch. 2.)
This week is Shabbat Mevorchim. Rosh Chodesh Tevet will be on Friday, the 6th day of Chanuka.
This week and next week we will omit אָב הָרַחֲמִים before Mussaf.
Mincha:
This week and next week we will omit צִדְקָתְךָ at Mincha.
Motzai Shabbat:
Motzai Shabbat:
Add אַתָּה חוֹנַנְתָּנוּ in the 4th Bracha of the Amida.
Add עַל הַנִּסִּים in the Amida during מוֹדִים and in Birkat haMazon during נוֹדֶה לְךָ.
In Shul the Menora is lit after the full-Kaddish - before וְיִתֶּן לְךָ (after ensuring that it's already Motzai Shabbat if prayers started early).
At home, on Motzai Shabbat, one first makes Havdalah and then lights the Chanukah Menorah.
On the first night we say 3 Brachot before lighting:

No Halocho-a-Day tomorrow; it's Shushan Purim for us in Jerusalem

Halocho #748 - Is tomorrow a fast day?
In a non-leap year the 13th of Adar is Ta'anit Esther.
In leap years - like this year 5771 - תשע"א - we fast and celebrate Purim in Adar-II.
However, in Adar-I we mark the days as "Purim Katan".
One should eat a bigger meal to increase happiness on 14th of Adar-I. Even in "walled cities" where Shushan-Purim is celebrated (e.g. Jerusalem) this is done on 14th (not 15th) of Adar-I.
During Adar-I the Megila is not read, nor does one say עַל הַנִּסִּים.

Halocho #705 - Rosh Chodesh and Chanukah
Tomorrow (Tuesday) and Wednesday is Rosh Chodesh Tevet.
Rosh Chodesh Tevet is the only time the full-Hallel is said on Rosh Chodesh. (Usually on Rosh Chodesh we leave out 2 half-paragraphs.)
Between Shacharit and Mussaf we will take out 2 Sifrei Torah. First we call up 3 people to the Torah for Rosh Chodesh and then - in the second Sefer Torah - a fourth person for Chanukah.
We then daven Mussaf for Rosh Chodesh, with Al Hanisim.
Starting tonight - Monday night - don't forget Ya'aleh Veyavo and Al Hanisim in the Amida and Birkat Hamazon.

Halocho #524 - Shushan Purim is tonight
Today - Sunday - Purim is celebrated in most of the world.
The Purim meal should begin with a Dvar-Torah. Since Purim is 30 days before Pessach, the following is an appropriate Purim-meal Dvar-Torah:
“The laws of Pessach in Shulchan Aruch begin with: One should start learning the laws of Pessach thirty days before Pessach.”
In Jerusalem - and other cities that were walled in the time Joshua-ben-Nun conquered the Holy Land - we celebrate Shushan-Purim a day later.
On both Purim and Shushan-Purim Tachanun, Kel-Erach-Apaim and Lamenatze'ach are not said and fasting is not allowed.
Don't forget to add עַל הַנִּסִּים during Amida and Birkat Hamazon.

Halocho #513 - Rosh Chodesh on Sunday and Monday
This Sunday and Monday is Rosh Chodesh Adar
When the 3rd Shabbos meal continues into the night, one still inserts Retzai – רצה during Birkas Hamazon (grace after meals).
When one starts a meal on Erev Rosh Chodesh and eats a Kezayit (the size of an olive – 27 cc) of bread after dark, one inserts Ya’aleh V’Yavo – יעלה ויבוא during Birkas Hamazon.
What happens when both of the above happen together?
If Rosh Chodesh is on Sunday and one eats a Kezayis of bread after dark during the 3rd Shabbos meal, then one inserts both Retzai – רצה and Ya’aleh V’Yavo – יעלה ויבוא during Birkas Hamazon.
However, some argue that mentioning both is a contradiction – since Shabbos and Rosh Chodesh aren’t on the same day.
Therefore one should be careful not to eat after dark at the 3rd Shabbos meal when Rosh Chodesh is on Sunday.
The same concept applies to Al-Hanism in 2 weeks time when Purim will be on Sunday.

No Tachanun is said on Chanukah, starting from Mincha the day before. Kel Erech Apa'im - א-ל ארך אפים - is not said before Kriat HaTorah on Chanukah. Lamenatze'ach- למנצח - is not said after Ashrei during Chanukah. One does not fast on Chanukah, except for a Ta'anit Chalom (fasting after a worrisome dream.) Halocho #74 - What is Purim all about?
Purim celebrates the redemption from Haman's evil plot to annihilate the Jews. He was not interested in converting them nor in capturing their land - he simply wanted to kill them. All of them; all of us. Purim celebrates being alive, so the Mitzvos of the day are more physical than spiritual. This is the gist of the Al-Hanisim. It is added to bentching (grace after meals) before "Ve'al Hakol" and to davening (prayers) during "Modim". If Al-Hanisim is forgotten there is no need to make amends, though it can be said later (and some Sidurim have relevant instructions.) After hearing the Megila and sending Mishloach Manos and Matonos L'Evyonim the final Mitzva of the day is the Purim meal. Since the highlights of the Purim saga involved wine, there's a Mitzva to drink more than one usually does, so that one falls asleep as a result. However, people who can't control themselves when inebriated, or who risk missing any Mitzva in the process, are forbidden to drink. Source: Kitzur Shulchan Aruch 141:1, 6, 142:6

Halocho #72 - Three-fold Purim
This year Purim is on Friday (21 March) and Shushan-Purim is on Shabbos, so cities that celebrate Shushan-Purim - like Jerusalem and Shushan (Susa, Iran) - will celebrate in 3 parts:
1. Friday:
2. Shabbos:
3. Sunday:
This is the opinion of the Shulchan Oruch. Some people also do #3 on Shabbos. Others send Mishloach Monos on Friday.
Source: Shulchan Oruch, Orach Chaim 688:6, Mishna Brura ibid.
Shmos 17:8-16
8 : Then came Amolek, and fought with Israel in Rephidim.
9 : And Moshe said to Joshua: "Choose men, and go fight with Amlek: tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of G-d in my hand".
10 : So Joshua did as Moshe had said to him, and fought with Amolek: and Moshe, Aaron, and Chur went up to the top of the hill.
11 : And it came to pass, when Moshe held up his hand, that Israel prevailed: and when he let down his hand, Amolek prevailed.
12 : But Moshe's hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat thereon; and Aaron and Chur supported up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.
13 : And Joshua weakened Amolek and his people with the the sword.
14 : And the Hashem said to Moshe: "Write this for a memorial in the book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua: for I will utterly wipe out the remembrance of Amolek from under heaven.
15 : And Moshe built an altar, and called the name of it "Hashem did miracles":
16 : And he said, "Because the Hashem has sworn that Hashem will have war with Amolek from generation to generation."
