Halocho #344 - Do bed sheets need Tzitzit?

Parshat Shlach ends with the third paragraph of Shma which talks about the Mitzva of Tzitzit.

Wearing Tzitzit is supposed to remind one of all 613 Mitzvoth - as it says "...make Tzitzit, and see them and thereby remember all the Mitzvoth of Hashem and do them".

Once a boy is toilet-trained he should wear a Tallit Katan - a 4-cornered garment with Tzitzit from the time he wakes up until he goes to sleep. This is besides the Tallit worn in shul.

Women are exempt from the Mitzva of Tzitzit, as it's a time-bound Mitzva; it only applies during the day.

When putting on Tzitzit in the morning, the Bracha cannot be made until it is light enough outside to recognize a casual acquaintance from 4 Amos (2 meters) away. This is about an hour before sunrise in Israel.

Men must put Tzitzit on all 4-cornered garments they wear, including ponchos. Bed sheets do not need Tzitzit.

Tzitzit may be worn even when going into a bathroom, however the Tallit used for Davening should not be taken into the bathroom.

Halocho #306 - A day full of Mitzvot

Tomorrow - Wednesday - is Erev Pessach; a busy day.

- Remember to do Birkat Hachama soon after sunrise - see Halocho #290

- Don't forget to do Eruv Tavshilin before candle-lighting, if you live outside Israel - see Halocho #304

- Remember to light a 48-hour candle (or leave on a flame on the stove) so that you can light Shabbat candles on Friday afternoon, if you live outside Israel .

- For details of the Fast of the Firstborn see Halocho #301

One does not say מִזְמוֹר לְתוֹדָה nor לַמְנַצֵּחַ from Erev Pessach until Isru Chag.

One may not eat Chametz after 1/3 of the day - and then one needs to burn ones Chametz and say Kol Chamira declaring all Chametz one owns to be ownerless like dust.

Work that may not be done on Chol Hamo'ed may not be done on Erev Pessach after noon.

One may not eat Matza on Erev Pessach.

Wishing everybody a meaningful and enjoyable Pessach

Halocho #290 A rare Mitzvah: once every 28 years

In the Gemara in Brachot (59b) we learn: "When seeing the sun at its Tekufah, the moon at its strength, the stars in their paths, and the Zodiacal constellations in their order, one says Blessed be the Maker of creation. " "And when does this happen? " "Abaye said: Every 28 years when the cycle begins again and the Nisan equinox falls into Saturn on the evening of Tuesday, going into Wednesday." As recorded in the Chumash, the sun was created on Wednesday - and every 28 years it returns to the same spot. You can read more about it at http://www.answers.com/topic/birkat-hahammah This year on Wednesday Erev Pessach (8 April 2009) is the 206th time the sun will be back at its original location. There's an entire order-of-prayer that is traditionally said and can be found at http://www.yeshiva.org.il/midrash/pdf/pdf93/birkatHamaA.pdf At the very least one should say the following Bracha when first seeing the sun on Wednesday, Erev Pessach (8 April 2009)

בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה ה' אֱלקֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם עוֹשֶׂה מַעֲשֵׂה בְּרֵאשִׁית
The Bracha said as early as possible after sunrise, and cannot be said after noon. Source: Kitzur Shulchan Aruch 60:6, 7 - Danny Monday, 20 Adar 5769 Note: Birkat Hachama happened on Erev Pessach 3 cycles ago - in 1925 - and many years ago in 1309. The year we left Egypt (2447) and the miracle of Purim (3403) were not Birkat Hachama years. All this despite the claims of the Qadosh Elyon and emails to the contrary.

Halocho #247 - Always wear your Tzitzit

Jewish males should not walk 4 Amot (~2 meters) without wearing Tzitzit.
As soon as he gets out of bed he should put on Tzitzit.
If he has not yet washed his hands, he should not make the Bracha on Tzitzit yet.
One also cannot make the Bracha on Tzitizit until "Misheyakir": When it's light enough outside to recognize a casual acquaintance from a distance of 4 Amot.
Misheyakir is about an hour before sunrise. Check a Lu'ach for precise times.

This week's Parsha - Shlach - ends with the third paragraph of Shma which talk about the Mitzva of Tzitzis.
