Halocho #2329 - What Bracha does one make on Good News?

When finding out joyous tidings or upon hearing good news from a reliable source, one says a Bracha.

If it only affects oneself, then one says שֶׁהֶחֱיָנוּ; "... who has kept us alive, sustained us and permitted us to reach this occasion."

If it affects a group of people then one says הַטּוֹב וְהַמֵּטִיב; "..Who is Good, and bestows good."

If one cannot say the Bracha right away - due to an unclean location or hands - then one can say it later, as long as one still feel the joy.

Even if the joyful event will probably cause one trouble at a later date, one still says the Bracha.

Halocho #2328 - Can one say Kiddush Levanah by a window?

Yesterday - 3 Tammuz - was the day that יְהוֹשֻׁעַ told the sun and moon to stop orbiting, as recounted in Sefer Yehoshua Ch.10, verses 12-14.

Kiddush Levanah - (the blessing on the new moon) - can be found in any Siddur; usually after the Ma'ariv service.

Men have an obligation to say Kiddush Levanah every month. The custom is that women do not say Kiddush Levanah.

Kiddush Levanah cannot be said before the new moon is 3 days (72 hours) old. Some even wait until it's 7 days old.

Kiddush Levanah can only be said while the moon is waxing.

Kiddush Levanah should not be said while standing under a roof. However, if this is impossible or impractical, then it can be said inside by a window.

Halocho #2327 - Removing scabs on Shabbat

Reminder: Today is Rosh Chodesh!

It is forbidden to draw blood on Shabbat even from one's own body.

One may not squeeze pimples or open up wounds on Shabbat, as that would cause puss and/or blood come out.

One may remove scabs on Shabbat, if one is sure that no bleeding will occur.

Halocho #2326 - If I forgot to say Yaaleh VeYavoh in Benching?

Today is the 1st day of Rosh Chodesh Tammuz.

One may not fast on Rosh Chodesh.

Though it's a Mitzvah to eat a bigger meal on Rosh Chodesh, there is no obligation to eat bread on Rosh Chodesh.

If one ate bread on רֹאשׁ חֹדֶשׁ then during Birkat haMazon one adds יַעֲלֶה וְיָבֹא.

If one forgot to add  יַעֲלֶה וְיָבֹא and one has started the next בְּרָכָה, then one continues; no way to make amends.

But, if one remembers before starting the next בְּרָכָה, then one inserts the following short בְּרָכָה:

בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יי אֱ-לֹקֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם אֲשֶׁר נָתַן רָאשֵׁי חֳדָשִׁים לְעַמּוֹ יִשְֹרָאֵל לְזִכָּרוֹן

One then continues with the last בְּרָכָה of the benching.

Halocho #2325 - Transporting Kosher food

Kosher meat that is given to a non-Jew to store or transport, needs 2 seals to ensure it's not tampered with.

The same applies to wine that is not cooked and to fish that no longer have their scales attached.

Cooked wine, wine-vinegar, milk, bread and cheese only need one seal.

The above applies whether a non-Jew is involved, or a Jew who cannot be trusted to keep Kosher.

Halocho #2324 - Kashering from meat to milk

When needed, one can Kasher utensils that are not Kosher. E.g. if one put a Milky spoon in a hot bowl of Meat it cannot be used until it is Kashered.

Before Pesach, one can Kasher certain Chametz utensils to make them Kosher for Pesach.

When possible, Kashering should be done under the supervision of somebody who has learned all the intrinsic laws of Kashering.

When utensils are Kashered, they become Kosher and Parev; neither milky nor meaty.

The custom is to refrain from Kashering Milky utensils to use them subsequently for Meaty, or Meaty utensils to use them for Milky.

Halocho #2323Halocho #2323 - Today in history: Who was burnt to death with a Sefer Torah?

The Shulchan Aruch says that it's appropriate to fast today - 27 Sivan - since about 2,000 years ago on this date, the Romans wrapped the great רַבִּי חֲנִינָא בֶּן תְּרַדְיוֹן  in a Sefer Torah and burnt him to death.

Rabbi Chanina ben Tradyon was one of the 10 martyrs.

King David started Tehillim - Psalms - by declaring:

  אַשְׁרֵי הָאִישׁ אֲשֶׁר לֹא הָלַךְ בַּעֲצַת רְשָׁעִים
 וּבְדֶרֶךְ חַטָּאִים לֹא עָמָד
 וּבְמוֹשַׁב לֵצִים לֹא יָשָׁב
Blessed is the man who doesn't walk in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the gathering of the scornful.

Rabbi Chanina ben Tradyon taught (Avot 3:3):

  • A gathering of the scornful is when Jews sit together and don't discuss Torah-related topics.
  • When Jews do discuss Torah then the Shechina - Gcd's presence - is with them.
  • Even when a lone Jew learns Torah (like a Halocho a Day), Hashem takes note and rewards him.

Halocho #2322 - Do bed-sheets need Tzitzit?

Wearing Tzitzit is supposed to remind one of all 613 Mitzvoth - as it says "...make Tzitzit, and see them and thereby remember all the Mitzvoth of Hashem and do them".

Once a boy is toilet-trained he should wear a Tallit Katan - a 4-cornered garment with Tzitzit from the time he wakes up until he goes to sleep. This is besides for the Tallit worn in shul.

Women are exempt from the Mitzvah of Tzitzit, as it's a time-bound Mitzvah; it only applies during the day.

When putting on Tzitzit in the morning, the Bracha cannot be made until it is light enough outside to recognize a casual acquaintance from 4 Amos (~2 meters) away. This is about an hour before sunrise in Israel.

Men must put Tzitzit on all 4-cornered garments they wear, including ponchos. Bedsheets do not need Tzitzit.

Tzitzit may be worn even when going into a bathroom. However, the Tallit used for Davening should not be taken into the bathroom.

If one cooks meat in almond milk, one has to leave some almonds in the dish, so that people do not suspect one of having cooked meat in milk.

Halocho #2320 - Meat after cheese

After eating milky products one needs to wash one's hands or check them carefully, eat something hard (like bread) and rinse one's mouth or drink something and check between one's teeth or brush them. Then - if it's not during the same meal - one can eat meat right away.

The exception is hard cheese that aged for 6 months or became wormy. After eating such cheese, one needs to wait 6 hours before eating meat.

Source: Kitzur Shulchan Aruch 46:11

As we learned yesterday, some have the custom to only wait 1 or 3 hours.

There's a debate among Poskim if modern hard cheese that didn't age 6 months is considered like hard cheese. Check with your favorite LOR.

Halocho #2319 - Eating milk after chewing meat

After eating meat or chicken, one must wait 6 hours before eating milky products.

Even if one only chewed the meat, but did not swallow it, one must still wait.

If, after waiting 6 hours, one finds meat stuck between one's teeth, one has to remove it and rinse one's mouth and eat something solid before eating Milky, though one need not wait another 6 hours.

If the food did not contain any meat, chicken or gravy, but was simply cooked in a meaty pot - even if the pot wasn't spotlessly clean - one may eat milk immediately.

Source: Kitzur Shulchan Aruch 46:9-10

Some have the custom of only waiting 1 hour or 3 hours, and not 6 hours between meat and milk. Everybody should follow their family Minhag.

It's a Torah prohibition to cause pain to animals.

It’s a Mitzvah to help horses that are pulling a wagon and are struggling due to the incline or the rough terrain – even if they don’t belong to Jew.

Halocho #2317 - Lego, lids and screws on Shabbat

Items made of various parts can be assembled on Shabbat, if the connections are loose, and it is taken apart and put back together frequently. (Like Lego pieces.)

If the parts are supposed to be tightly connected or screwed together - so as to "almost never" take them apart (like most door handles) -  then you cannot assemble them on Shabbat, even if you don't tighten the connection.

Lids of dishes may be taken off and put back on even if they are tight (like Tupperware) since they are not meant to remain connected permanently.

Halocho #2316 - Which are the Milky dishes?

One cannot use the same dishes and cutlery for eating meat and milk.

If one has 2 identical sets of dishes, then the custom is to mark the Milky dishes (with permanent ink, a scratch or otherwise) in order to tell them apart.

Halocho #2315 - You eat meat, I'll eat milk

Two acquaintances are not allowed to share the same table, if one is eating a meat meal and the other is eating a milky meal.

This applies to friends, family and even to casual acquaintances who wouldn't feel comfortable sharing their food.

If there is some sort of separation on the table, then they are allowed to share the table. For example, if they each have their own placemat, or there is something between them on the table that normally is not on the table, like food (bottle of whiskey) or vessels (vase or extra saltcellars).

They should not share the same cup, pitcher or bottle, since food can get stuck on it and passed from one to the other.

They also should not be sharing the same loaf of bread. The custom is that they do not even share the same saltcellars.

Halocho #2314 - White hair

A man may not wear clothes nor jewelry that only women wear, nor may a woman wear men-only apparel.

Who-wears-what is defined by local custom and may change over time.

A man may not pluck out even a single white hair (unless all his hair has turned white) nor may he dye his white hair. A woman may.

Halocho #2313 - Kosher dog food?

There are 3 prohibitions regarding meat and milk:

  • One may not eat them together
  • One may not cook them together
  • One may not derive any benefit from such a mixture

Some mixtures of meat and milk are forbidden even as food to be fed to one's pets.

From other mixtures of meat and milk one is allowed to derive benefit. A competent Rabbinic authority needs to be consulted on a case-by-case basis.

Halocho #2312 - Shabbat food preparation

The Minhag is to bake one's own bread for Shabbat, thereby allowing the housewife to separate "Challah".

One should make 3 sizes: The medium-sized loaf is eaten Friday night, the bigger one on Shabbat morning and the smaller one at the 3rd meal (Se'udas Shlishit).

One should taste all Shabbos food on Friday to ensure it's tasty.

One may not eat a meal after mid-afternoon on Friday, so as not to spoil one's appetite for the Friday night meal.

Halocho #2311- Is your own blood Kosher?

If one bit into food - a piece of bread or fruit, for example - and some blood (from one's gums or elsewhere) gets onto the food, one has to remove the bloody part before eating the rest.

However, one may swallow one's own blood originating in one's mouth - from bleeding gums or a cut tongue, for example - if the blood did not leave one's mouth.

Note that on Shabbat one cannot draw blood, or even suck out blood from between one's teeth.

Halocho #2310 - When can one eat blood?

Kosher meat and fowl are kashered with coarse salt in order to remove as much blood as possible.

Since the liver is full of blood, salting it is ineffective. Liver needs to be roasted over an open flame to remove as much blood as possible.

Blood spots in eggs may not be eaten, and usually, the entire egg is discarded if it has a blood spot.

If a fish has fins and scales then it is Kosher, and its blood may be eaten. However, if the blood has separated from the fish and cannot be distinguished from non-fish blood then it is forbidden.

If a bowl of fish-blood has fish-scales floating in it, then it is permitted.

Halocho #2309 - Isru Chag; the day after Yom Tov

Today is the 2nd day of שָׁבוּעוֹת outside of Israel. Over here in Israel, it is already אִסְרוּ חַג.

The day after Yom Tov is called אִסְרוּ חַג, and the custom is to eat and drink more than a regular weekday, to mark the occasion.

One may not fast on אִסְרוּ חַג and no תַּחֲנוּן is said on אִסְרוּ חַג.

Some do not say תַּחֲנוּן for the entire week after שָׁבוּעוֹת since the קָּרְבָּנוֹת you had to bring when coming to the בֵּית הַמִּקְדָּשׁ on Yom Tov could be sacrificed during the entire week after שָׁבוּעוֹת.

Halocho #2308 - Eating on Erev Yom Tov

Erev Shavuot will be on שַׁבָּת. Remember to leave a fire burning (like a Yahrzeit candle) from before Shabbat so as to be able to light the Yom Tov candles on Motzai Shabbat from an existing flame.

In order not to spoil one's appetite for the Yom Tov meal, one should not eat a meal during the second half of the afternoon, on Erev Yom Tov.

This year - being שַׁבָּת - this refers to the 3rd Shabbat meal - סְעוּדָּה שְׁלִישִׁית. One should not eat סְעוּדָּה שְׁלִישִׁית during the second half of the afternoon on שַׁבָּת, if possible.

At the very least, one has to be careful to limit one's afternoon meal so that one will have an appetite for the Yom Tov meal.

Outside of Israel, this also applies to the first day of Yom Tov. So as not to spoil one's appetite for the evening meal of the 2nd day of Yom Tov one should not eat a meal during the second half of the afternoon of the first day.

Halocho #2307 - Today is Yom Hameyuchas - Pedigree Day

Today - in the year 2449 - a few days before Matan Torah, Hashem informed us that we're a Chosen Nation:

וִהְיִיתֶם לִי סְגֻלָּה מִכָּל-הָעַמִּים, כִּי-לִי כָּל-הָאָרֶץ
(Shmos 19:5)

As a result, today is often referred to as the Pedigree-Day; Yom-Hameyuchas.

No תַּחֲנוּן is said during the first part of סִיוָן  until אִסְרוּ חַג Shavu'ot (or a week later - depending on local custom).

Halocho #2306 - Tefillin on Rosh Chodesh

Today - Tuesday - is Rosh Chodesh Sivan. It's the day the Yidden arrived at Mount Sinai, as it says in Parshat יִתְרוֹ (Exodus 19:1):

בַּחֹדֶשׁ הַשְּׁלִישִׁי לְצֵאת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל מֵאֶרֶץ מִצְרָיִם בַּיּוֹם הַזֶּה בָּאוּ מִדְבַּר סִינָי

The Mitzvah of תְּפִלִּין was given to the Yidden right after leaving Egypt - before they arrived at Har Sinai.

Men wear תְּפִלִּין every day during Shacharit (morning prayers) except for Shabbat and Yom Tov.

Rosh Chodesh has some aspects of a Yom Tov, yet work is permitted.

Tefillin are worn on Rosh Chodesh during Shacharit, הַלֵּל and the Torah reading. They are removed before starting מוּסָף.

Halocho #2305 - Ruth and Shavu'ot

This year - 5779 - Shavu'ot will be on Sunday.

Outside of Israel the second day of Shavu'ot will be on Monday.

It's customary to read מְגִלַּת רוּת on Shavu'ot, between Hallel and the Torah Reading.

In Israel, מְגִלַּת רוּת will be read on Sunday and in the Diaspora most places will read מְגִלַּת רוּת on Monday.

One has to remember to leave a flame burning (like a Yahrzeit candle or gas range) from before Shabbat so that one can light the Yom Tov candles on Motzai Shabbat - Saturday night after dark.
