Halocho #81 - Eating before Mussaf

If one makes Kiddush after Shacharis, before praying Mussaf, then one should eat no more than a Kezayit (size of an egg - 28cc) of bread or cake. One can eat unlimited amounts of fruit. If one wants to eat only fruit, then one has to drink a mouthful of Kiddush wine and another Revi'is (86cc) of wine. A Cohen who is going to do Birkas Cohanim (bless the congregation) in Mussaf, must hear Kiddush from another person, as he is not allowed to drink alcoholic beverages before Birkas Cohanim . 1. Danny-

Now that you brought it up, I would appreciate if you can fill in some blanks.

    1. Is it indeed true that a Kohen cannt drink wine before duchening?

    2. Wine in days of chazal was much stronger than the wine now

    3. You only need a melo lugmov of wine to be yotzai kiddush... not a whole reviis.

    Any thoughts? Sources?

  2. Hi R' Ari

    1. What I wrote is based on the Kitzur (100:3)

קודם נשיאת כפים לא ישתה הכהן לא יין ולא שאר משקה ממשקות המשכרין. ואם לבו חלוש ורוצה לאכול פת כיסנין קודם מוסף ישמע קידוש מאחר

    2. The Kitzur lived in "our time" so he knew he weak our wines are.

    3. The Kitzur also knew how little you need to drink for Kiddush.

The source for the Kitzur isn't that obvious, as the Shulchan Oruch says in Orach Chaim 128:38 that drinking less than a Revi'is is OK.

(Drinking more than a Revi'is even if it's diluted somewhat is not OK.)

It's possible that the Kitzur simplified the Halocho - as he is wont to do - so as not to confuse the layman with non-essential details.

  3. Somebody asked me:
What if the Kohen makes kiddush on Grape juice or Chomer Medina (other alcoholic beverages)?

    I responded:
The Kitzur doesn't elaborate, but a quick look in Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim 128:38 gives us more details - specifically the Mishna Brura (141) and B'er Heitev (64). [Page 17 of Vol. 2]:

    - The Mogen Avraham allows a Cohen to do Birkas Cohanim after drinking alcoholic beverages other than wine. Many Achronim disagree - the Taz being the most stringent.

    - The Mogen Avraham forbids a Cohen to do Birkas Cohanim after drinking Grape Juice (Yayin Migito) since a Nazir may not drink it. Some (unspecified) Achronim allow it since you cannot get drunk on Grape Juice.

    Hope this helps,

    - Danny (not a Rabbi)
